Timber and EUDR: What Cameroon’s Forestry Exporters Are Facing in 2026

Timber was one of the two original commodities the EU deforestation rules were written for. Cameroon’s sector has more traceability infrastructure than most, and further to go than most assume.

Why Timber EUDR Cameroon Is Not the Same as FLEGT

Timber is not a new compliance conversation for Cameroon’s forestry sector the way it is for cocoa or coffee. The country has operated under the EU’s Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) framework and a Voluntary Partnership Agreement for years. That’s a genuine head start, but it is not the same thing as timber EUDR Cameroon compliance, and treating FLEGT documentation as sufficient is the most common mistake we see in this sector.

Where FLEGT and Timber EUDR Cameroon Diverge

FLEGT verifies legality, that timber was harvested and traded in accordance with Cameroonian law. Timber EUDR Cameroon requires that plus a separate, affirmative deforestation-free determination tied to plot-level geolocation and the 31 December 2020 cut-off date. A FLEGT license demonstrates legal sourcing; it does not on its own demonstrate that the specific harvest area wasn’t deforested or degraded after that date.

Timber EUDR Cameroon Geolocation Is Harder Than Tree Crops

Cocoa and coffee geolocation deals with static smallholder plots. Timber concessions involve harvest areas that shift within a broader concession boundary over time, and the unit that needs geolocating is the actual harvested area for a given consignment, not just the concession as a whole. This requires forestry-specific mapping practice, typically GIS-based concession and cutting-block mapping, that most cocoa-focused traceability vendors don’t offer for timber EUDR Cameroon.

Where Commercial Risk Concentrates for Timber EUDR Cameroon

Exporters selling into EU markets through established, EU-facing timber trading houses are furthest along, since those buyers have been managing FLEGT and now timber EUDR Cameroon compliance directly. The exposure sits more with smaller sawmills and semi-processors selling through intermediaries, where the plot-to-shipment traceability chain is harder to document end-to-end.

What to Prioritise Now for Timber EUDR Cameroon

  • Confirm whether your concession’s existing legality documentation includes geolocated cutting-block records, not just concession boundaries
  • Establish whether your buyer is asking for a standalone EUDR risk assessment separate from your FLEGT paperwork for timber EUDR Cameroon
  • If selling through an intermediary, confirm in writing who files the DDS and what data they need from you
